:: The World’s Cheapest Car ::

Filed under: Technology

The world’s cheapest car has been unveiled. India’s Tata Motors presented the “Tata Nano” with a price tag of $2500 during the India’s main auto show. It is about 10 feet long, 5 feet wide. The 2-cylinder petrol engine delivers 33 horsepower and a top speed of just over 60 mph. It is a car with a sloping roof and a snub nose which can fit about five people if they squeezed in it. On the other hand, it has some downsides: first, there is no radio, no air bags, no passenger-side mirror and has only a single windshield wiper. The air-conditioner is only available in the deluxe version.  A lot of people tend to imply that it sacrificed its quality in order to sell it in a cheap price but the manufacturers are confident that it will meet the safety standards and will not contribute to pollution that much. As of now, it is only available in India but plans of exporting it have already been developed. Jamie Leather pointed out though that "The cheaper and cheaper vehicles become, the quicker those pollution levels will increase,”. To know more about it click here

:: Outsmarting Terror ::

Filed under: Technology

2007 was a great year indeed, a lot of good things happened. As the year was about to end, I came across a very interesting special of the National Geographic Channel. The title of the documentary was “Outsmarting Terror” and it was all about the different technologies that people have invented to possibly eliminate or lessen terrorism in different situations. I was really amazed because most of the technologies mentioned were really things that I have never heard of. Various technologies were mentioned such as scent detection devices, jetliners that repel heat-seeking missiles, to devices that can save people trapped inside a 50-story building, to robots that detect nuclear weapons, etc. If you haven’t watched the show, check the National Geographic Website to know when they will air the episode/special again…

:: The Spray-on Life Saver ::

Filed under: Technology

Would you believe that a spray-on for truck bedliner could protect people against an explosion and save the lives of people? At first I thought of it as something that is impossible but after watching the “Outsmarting Terror” episode, I was proven wrong. The show featured “Line-x” a spray-on primarily intended for trucks and vehicles but scientists have discovered a new use for the product. It can be sprayed-on to a wall to make it tougher to the extent that it can withstand an explosion. The show even presented a so-called reenactment of two situations, one with Line-x sprayed on the wall and the other is just a plain wall. The one without Line-x was completely devastated but the one with the spray-on remained intact. I was really amazed by the simulation because it was very convincing and they proved that it can really save lives of many people. Even the pentagon nowadays is using the said substance. :: Bomb Sniffer ::

Filed under: Technology

A man was once caught wearing a shoe with explosives in them and it almost ended into another terrorist attack. Because of that incident, a new invention has been made that acts just like a sniffing dog that detects any explosive compounds. It is more commonly known as “Bomb Sniffer”. It is implemented in some of the airports already and is working very well in preventing terrorist attacks. The passenger only has to get inside the machine for a matter of seconds and it’s done. Once inside, the machine blows air from the wholes around the machine. After that, the machine also has a sucking mechanism to use to be able to use the sucked air for analysis. The machine would detect any signature of explosive chemical no matter how minute it is. Certainly, it is one of the most brilliant and outstanding invention that could really save the lives of many innocent people against terrorist attacks. For a more detailed explanation, click here

:: Anti-Biological Weapon Robot ::

Filed under: Technology

Terrorists have various means of inflicting terror in the lives of many individuals. Sadly, among them are the biological weapons which can kill thousands of people in a very short period of time. Luckily, a solution has been invented by Berlin-based robotics specialists, the RoboWatch. They have launched a mobile security robot which can determine if there are biological, nuclear and chemical hazards around. According to Ulf Stremmel, Managing Director of RoboWatch Technologies, "It possesses sensors enabling it to sniff out all current tactical and industrial gases as well as radioactive materials. It investigates, for instance, type and concentration of released gases, while simultaneously transmitting video images from the location to the control room." Not only do they prevent terrorist attacks but they can also help in monitoring a specific area. In any case, prevention of such devastating events would lessen the amount of costs spent for recovery. Want to read more? Click here….
